Decorating Advice .. for a quick paint job

I have a house which was rented out, the tenancy for which ends tomorrow.
Obviously, I'll have to paint the entire house. Regarding walls and ceilings, normally when painting I've just used Wilko paint, it's quite good value and there's a Wilko near to where I live. If I needed an extra coat, no big deal and usually I am just painting a single room
Now however, I have to paint the whole house, so maybe it would be better to go for a better brand, perhaps meaning only a single coat. Does one-coat paint really work and which brands are good. Boringly, the walls were all magnolia silk and the ceilings matt white. Is this still OK, or would a light grey maybe be better for the walls, or even white
Currently, the architraves and skirtings are stained / varnished .. is it maybe better for these to be white now ... what do you think ?
If so, which primer would be required.
The doors are oak and were varnished .. I'll just re-varnish
A final question ... is white oil-based gloss still good to use (banister and a few places too) or is water-based the way-to-go now
thank you

If your tenancy ends tomorrow aren't you leaving it too late to completely repaint the entire house?0

Keep the magnolia, even a light grey can look dingy. Changing the varnish to white paintwork will need a fair bit of prep and probably more than one coat. There has been a problem with white gloss yellowing over time, so a water based diamond finish is preferable."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.1

Yes, I realise the varnished skirtings etc will take a few extra coats, but would that be a good idea or not .. to give the property a more modern feel .. perhaps0 -
If it's an older property, varnished woodwork can add a bit of character. Certainly white woodwork will brighten rooms, but it might make the varnished doors look a bit odd.
