I'm gonna get my husband to take a look at your advice and see what he says because it would certainly make life simpler to do this.  It's just a pain whenever we have people round and if they want to pop out to their car or whatever, we have to unlock the door for them to let them out as there's a certain knack to it.

Surely with euro locks being keyed or thumbturn is irrelevant to the lock mechanism as the cam is the same and does an identical job regardless of the lock type.
Before buying a replacement look try removing then replacing your current euro barrel. If you can do that you can change the lock.
  • Good idea, NC.

SKM, your hubby can also measure it when out to make sure you get the right size replacement.

As I said, check out YouTube vids, but I have done this myself - tho' a few years ago - and it's surprisingly simple, being only a single bolt.

The only things to look out for are that the key needs to be in the right position - so the locking lever is 'in' the body of the lock so it can be withdrawn, and you might need to cut the fixing bolt down to size - they come long length with snap-off sections, I think. You'll have the old one to compare it by, of course.

Not sure if they come with a bolt, but you can just use the original one.

Thanks, really useful advice.  My husband changed the lock on our old front door without any issues, this was just replacing like for like though, and youtube is always a good shout.  Thanks.

The only thing to watch for with this door, especially if changing to a thumb turn is to somehow always make sure you exit with a key, as without it you won't be able to get in.  I know its like that now - but at least at the moment when you open the door you at least have your hand on the key to open the door - if its a thumb turn it might be easier to forget, only remembering when you hear the door lock itself automatically behind you!

This front door is by no means cheap, the auto lock must have added to the price.
