Varifocals from Asda?

Just been told I need varifocal. Staff in Asda seemed great but after seeing youtube video I am now questioning my choice.
I'm a heavy computer user and nobody at Asda mentioned this point, I feel i needed a pair for work as  8 hours a day on a laptop makes me think i need them?

Nobody said anything about what kind of lenses they use. Also Asda use the marker pen on the glasses, where a more modern practice would use a digital sysyem and take far more measurements.

The very informative video i saw was a uk specialist in Preston UK.

So what I am asking is the question of "Are Asda really the place for a first time Varifocal wearer"?

They are as good as anywhere, and good value. Yes, Specsavers use iPads to measure the relevant distances, but a mark on the lens in front of the pupil is the traditional way that was used for years.

Why do you feel you need a pair specifically for display screen work? Varifocals are designed to be worn all day, not just for screen work.

if mainly VDU work better off with an office type lens rather than varifocal.

Marking up with pen just as accurate , a lot of the mesurments taken are a bit of theatre.

I work at a computer for 8 hours a day and my varifocals (from Specsavers) are fine for that.

I'm thinking of going down this route too. I wear glasses for distance, but can read fine without. I am constantly looking over the top of them on the computer at work. Specsavers have suggested them in the past. I assume that If I go ahead I am better choosing the most expensive lens ?
  • I went to Asda here in Barry(Wales) and I've had my glasses for  about two weeks now.
I'm amazed I've taken to them so well. There was a two for one offer but having had so many issues due to complex prescription , I went for one pair for £80.

I took to them in a few hours. Staff were amazing as was the lady doing the eye test.

Last week I also went to Cardiff University Eye Clinic( state of the art teaching clinic) who sell the Essilor lenses:

They seem amazing but they are around £4-£500. They simply do not have the buying power of Asda or similar.

I am going to get a second pair of glasses and will possibly try out Specsavers this time.

    Stick to Asda
Check if Asda are doing any offers.

For example, Specsavers do the 2 for 1 offer on glasses (above £69) which I recently took advantage of by buying a pair of reading glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses. Total cost £89 (both pairs were £89 each).

I can also buy another pair of glasses for half price for a limited period (I think 3 months).

Not sure if offers are available on varifocals but it might be worth checking in Asda before you go somewhere different.

But if Asda were so great, why would you want to go elsewhere anyway?

  • That video is awful, you are trying to concentrate on what he is saying and there is music playing in the background and even people talking
    Old enough to know better...........

Maybe my hearing is shot after 30 years as a DJ , but I did not have any issues listening to him.
The video simply helped me understand Varifocals more.
