Claiming refunds when account has closed

Hi,
My father in-law had a short break in the uk cancelled due to lockdown but instead of asking for a refund at the time he agreed to rebook when things had improved. Unfortunately he recently passed away and the hotel/B&B say they can't process a refund as the original card has expired and we have had the account closed.

The bank wasn't very helpful with advice. Any guidance/advice from anyone before we contact the B&B again would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Suppliers often think (or say) they have to pay refunds onto the original card, but they don't so long as the person claiming the refund agrees to another form of repayment.

I would have thought that if your FiL was entitled to a refund, then so is his executor.  I'm sure others will know better than me.

I would suggest that your FiL's executor should write to the proprietor of the establishment setting out the circumstances and amount involved and claim the money legally due to the estate.

That would be the approach I would take, although they are likely to require proof that they are paying to the estate administrator.
