Formalising grant of probate

18 years ago I administered my father's estate and with co-executors had to attend a probate registry office to swear the probate application. Then 4 years ago for my FiL I had to do the same at a solicitors office. I see no reference to this procedure any more. Has it been dropped? I have not been able to get an answer from contactprobate@justice.gov.uk.
