Moving Meter
We rent a flat through an agency that is privately owned, it is above a shop. Our energy meters are in the basement of the shop which as you can imagine is a complete faff trying to get readings, through a hatch down a ladder, shop closed during lock down. We are having problems trying to get them moved to a suitable place for us to be able to read them or change to smart meters.
Where do we stand on trying to move this forward? Agents not much help neither are the suppliers

It will be a faff. It won't be free, either. Somebody will have to pay.The gas supply is down to your regional gas distributor. For me, that's Southern Gas Networks, but it could be someone else where you live. The electricity supply cutout (the main fuse) belongs to your regional District Network Operator, DNO. But the meter belongs to your electricity supplier. So that's three companies to contact. Expect the bill to be in the thousands of pounds. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Relocation will be a faff as above, but getting them changed to smart meters shouldn't be a problem, so long as there is a phone signal in the basement that the meters can use to report back the the data network used by the suppliers. Surely worth a go?

Rented flat, not your problem. Read them once when you move in and once when you move out. Live with the estimated bills in the meantime.0

If the meters are in the basement of the shop, how would you access them in an emergency? You must have access to the emergency control valve. Is there a shut off valve in your flat as well?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
