I guess the decision about multi asset at all depends on how much volatility you want mostly? So, if you're chasing higher returns without much regard for volatility then 100% equity is the best route, the less volatility you want the more you dial down the equities allocation.

Obviously in general terms, there are terms of multi asset beating 100% equities, it depends what you compare - e.g BG managed vs global tracker on 3 and 5 yrs etc.

Multi-asset or self managed portfolio? It's really just personal preference. Both can work perfectly well. Once you realize that there are lots of ways to be successful, hopefully you will stop looking for the "best way". Just follow the basic rules of diversification and asset allocation, be frugal and save and invest regularly for 30 or 40 years and you should be ok.

I'm not necessarily looking for the 'best' just the most suitable for my circumstances really, and I keep being undecided if 100% equities is suitable or not. On one hand if my needs don't dictate I need high returns then I should go for lower risk, on the other hand, if I have cash else where and can deal with the volatility, why not aim for a higher return, if I don't need it I may be able to put it to use for family etc.

I'm pretty sure I'll use both pure equities and multi asset, over the last few months I've learnt if I see one investment dip in value but another has held up, even if I'm overall down, I feel a bit more comfortable.
