Heating Control Energy Meter


My daughter has been with (SSE) since 1997 and she can’t move to another provider because she has two meters. One meter is called (standard energy) and the other one is called (heating control energy). Even worse, SSE told her the only tariff they can offer her is one that includes broadband and she can’t take that because she’s on contract to Vodaphone. it all seems so unfair. They told her they could give her a new standard meter but she will have to pay someone to rewire her house. I called an electrician on her behalf and he said, “Tell me what needs done and I’ll do it”. Trouble is, we have no idea what needs done or where to start. Why can't SSE do this after being with them for 24 years. Does anyone have any knowledge of this issue, it’s been ongoing for years and she’s stressed out of her box about it.

She presumably has electric storage heaters?
Assuming the meters are very close to each other, in my non-technical mind then it shouldn't be too hard to change over to an Economy 7 style meter which does a very similar job as to the two meters other than the time the storage heaters gets energy is fixed and you'd need to use the peak hour rates to top up if its not enough... the theoretical advantage of the SSE 2 meter solution is that if its very cold etc they can extend the hours you can get the off peak energy on.
Certainly worth doing your sums to make sure its cheaper to switch. Remember you cannot assume all of the current off peak usage would remain off peak with a traditional two period meter.1 -
The responsibility of the energy company ends at the meter tails. They don't want to take on any responsibility for the householder's wiring, especially if it's decades old, and in an unknown condition.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1
