renting attempted burglary estate agent says I must pay

Hi just looking for some guidance as had an attempted burglary in my rented (through estate agent) flat and the estate agent says I must pay for the damage. I've only just moved in and don't see that I am at fault. It is only on the framework to my exterior door surround and is a gouge next to the lock.
Googling says that the landlord is responsible. Any ideas it does not say in the contract that I am responsible.
Also looking for cheapish tenants insurance anybody recommend a firm?
Thanks in advance.

Would be covered under buildings insurance. I presume your landlord has this. Have you seen evidence of it? Is that all you're wanting to claim for? Contents would be your responsibility.2024 wins: *must start comping again!*1

This happened to me a couple of years ago (luckily just a damaged window and drainage pipe). Had nothing at all to do with us and the landlord and EA sorted it all.We just informed them when it happened and had to show the insurance company the area of damage1

Just to clarify, it's the landlord's responsibility, whether or not the landlord has insurance against it.6

Thanks all. Basically they didn't get in but damaged the frame of the door and the estate agents says I am liable to pay for it! I was sure that this was not the case. You kind of assume that estate agents know their stuff!0

Ensure you reported it to the police. Give the EA the reference number. This is not your repair/bill to pay
