Egg owes us for overpaid tax on our claim

Options
Some years ago we had a company secure a successful PPI claim. We paid a commission to them  (wish we'd read M.Lewis advice not to use expensive reclaim agents)
and we thought that was the end of the matter. This week my husband has had an email from the company saying that Egg overpaid tax by £200 and this would be due to us now. What we have to do is electronically sign in the box and they will pursue this on our behalf. It tells us also that we are contractually bound to use their company as we signed this at our initial claim at the start. The problem is, there is no contact details, and even more worrying - nothing to tell us what we are signing - just the sign here box to agree. Is this a scam? How can we find out? Will the Inland Revenue be able to help us find out?

Egg don't owe you any tax.

If you feel you shouldn't have paid income tax, simply claim it back via HMRC.  If you're a higher rate tax payer, you'll need to pa the additional tax.

Don't sign any more contracts with claims companies.

How can a third party company possibly know if you are due £200 tax back without you disclosing full details of all of your other taxable income?

They want to be your agent for tax matters which means any refund owed by HMRC comes through them and they remove a wedge before passing a pittance on to you.  Don't do it.  If you are owed tax by HMRC you can easily sort it yourself.

You say that 'a few years ago' you had a claim. So it's old now and what I'd do with that email is delete it and block the email address without even bothering to respond. Then I'd log in to my HMRC account just to check if anything was due. . . but I doubt it. Is it a scam? Well, you know what 'they' say - "if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck", etc.

As zx81 says, Egg doesn't owe you tax, they have no knowledge of your tax circumstances. Just somebody trying to get some money for nothing.

PPI refunds have tax deducted from the interest element of the loan, reclaiming it from HMRC is not a scam, just not everyone is due it back. You simply fill in form R40 and send it off to HMRC with all your interest for that tax year. The only issue is that the deadline is 4 years (including current tax year) so may well be out of date
