how/who pays company costs incurred between death of shareholder and inheritor of share?

If shareholder dies and their share is not transferred to the inheritor before a cash call by the company, to cover some legal costs, who is liable to pay that proportion of the costs?  No claim was made on the estate of the deceased but the company hounded the inheritor for the money (threatening legal action) just a few months after the death and months before they became the shareholder.  The inheritor begrudgingly paid without prejudice, believing they had no choice.

If the shares were left to a particular beneficiary then the it is that beneficiary who should bare the cost whether paid by them or the estate. 

My understanding of cash calls from companies is that a shareholder cannot be forced to pay, but those who don’t the value of their shareholding will be diluted, if this was a listed company then payment might have been worthwhile, but if it was some tinpot private company the beneficiary may well have just chucked away some good money on this.

It is a bit academic now but it might be worth asking about this over on the saving board.
