Ok thanks guys. It’s my first proper full time job in an office working for a utilities company. I was an idiot over the years as a youngen and defaulted some phone contracts and loans each under £900. They just said permanent employment offer given on condition of passing general background check including DBS check and fit to work certificate.
IT may depend on the actual details of the role you are going for but often the utilities companies are quite "inclusive" in terms of forgiving past misdemeanors - most of the utility companies subscribe to schemes to support the rehabilitation of ex-offenders.
They may well be forgiving of past misdemeanours  but the large utility company I worked for were crazy on health and safety on the job. Acts of gross misconduct included:
    • Parking such that you had to reverse out of the parking space
    • Walking whilst talking on the phone
    • Carrying more than one drink without using a cup holder
    • Going up or down the stairs without holding the handrail
I cannot remember them doing a credit check but it was only a temp role anyway. Being in Financial Services its common place, don't know anyone who's had a job offer withdrawn but did know one person have a meeting setup after one of the random on the job checks to discuss the results... the agent told them what they could do with their job and walked out never to be seen again. Don't know what the actual consequences would have been had they gone to the meeting.

They have these rules such as reverse parking and holding handrails where I work, but the reverse parking one is the only one that is properly enforced.

Assuming that you’ve since made good on the debts it’s not very likely to be an issue.

    have you?
I haven't, I haven't really had the means to repay them or make well on them, this is my first proper job and I intend to full focus on putting them right with this role.

Ours was technically you had to drive out of the space. In most cases that means you'll have reversed in but there were always a few people circling the carpark looking for a back to back set of spaces so they could drive through and leave the nose point out.

The cup holder was religiously enforced, it was pre smartphones so being on mobiles was generally less. The stairs were a bit lax but then they were so wide you could walk 6 people side by side so feels a waste to only have one on each side given the handrail requirement. Did get the odd manager shouting at anyone walking in the middle without handrail.

I am sure there were more, there was almost a whole book of them but most were relevant to those going up pylons etc.

That sounds like par for the course.

The debt stuff I think is more relevant to a job in banking or financial services.

The only one I've heard enforced is that my employer won't hire anyone that has been fired from a job.  Given the vagueness of references I'm not sure how they find out unless the employee actually admits to being fired.

Seems a weird rule to me. I can understand not employing someone who was sacked from their last job but it’s bizarre not to employ a 50 year old who was sacked when they were 16. As you point out after a certain point it’s essentially impossible to enforce.
