Has anyone had their off of employment withdrawn due to a bad credit history?

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has had their offer of employment withdrawn due to a bad credit history? I have just started a new job and I am awaiting confirmation of background check until I am offered a proper full time contract. I am bricking it that they might see my bad credit history and withdraw my offer of employment.

Many thanks

Management of personal finances can be used to categorise people fairly accurately.
  • Yes, but I had an active DRO at the time, references apparently had come back as perfect as possible, they just called me up on Friday, saying not to start on the Monday (it was a temp position within one of the larger Insurance companies at the time and specifically within Claims) they did let me know I could have tried again for a job after the DRO memorandom period was over.

Oddly they didn't want to put the withdrawal in writing which seemed rather a strange thing, but it was an Agency recruiting on behalf of the Insurance co.

Years later the opportunity to temp again came up, in comfort to you, I realised I had completely a lucky escape in 2013 on the day of that call!

I don't believe they decline on defaults alone. You want to work, You're in the door.

My last job came with the stipulation "you must be free to take up employment and be in no other employment contractual tie" kind of was hopeful that referred to ceasing Furlough workers looking to end up earning double as much more important sign of the times.

No, but my current employer for the role I'm in wouldn't accept anyone with a  CCJ etc.

As I understand it, it's not so much the financial history that is the issue, it's the increased likelihood of an applicant being tempted by bribery etc due to it. Therefore the risk is greater even though they've not actually done anything wrong.

Which industry are you in and what's your role?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Ok thanks guys. It’s my first proper full time job in an office working for a utilities company. I was an idiot over the years as a youngen and defaulted some phone contracts and loans each under £900. They just said permanent employment offer given on condition of passing general background check including DBS check and fit to work certificate.

I previously got declined for interviews based on my credit history, was open about having a CCJ as I know some places can't employ people with CCJs, IVAs or bankruptcy due to their own professional insurance. Each company was apologetic as I had a strong CV.

While looking for work I was told banks and utility companies wouldn't employ me due to it either.

Some insurance companies would as they understood things happen, however each application would be judged on its own merits and full disclosure of circumstances would be required for a decision to be made.

I decided to take a step backwards until my credit history cleaned up.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

IT may depend on the actual details of the role you are going for but often the utilities companies are quite "inclusive" in terms of forgiving past misdemeanors - most of the utility companies subscribe to schemes to support the rehabilitation of ex-offenders.

Assuming that you’ve since made good on the debts it’s not very likely to be an issue.

    have you?

They may well be forgiving of past misdemeanours  but the large utility company I worked for were crazy on health and safety on the job. Acts of gross misconduct included:
    • Parking such that you had to reverse out of the parking space
    • Walking whilst talking on the phone
    • Carrying more than one drink without using a cup holder
    • Going up or down the stairs without holding the handrail
I cannot remember them doing a credit check but it was only a temp role anyway. Being in Financial Services its common place, don't know anyone who's had a job offer withdrawn but did know one person have a meeting setup after one of the random on the job checks to discuss the results... the agent told them what they could do with their job and walked out never to be seen again. Don't know what the actual consequences would have been had they gone to the meeting.
