EDF standing charge only

Hi,

Hoping someone can help.

We are moving house in a few weeks, but will still own our current property while we try to sell it. We are currently with EDF and I am trying to reduce to standing charge only from out move date (plus the very minimal electricity use for lights during viewings), but they are acting like this is a really unusual request and can't be done?

It seems mad to be paying as much as we are for an empty house...is my request odd? Is it doable?

Thanks in advance.

Search using Citizens Advice and 'Which? Switch', entering your annual usage as 1kWh and don't forget to try separate suppliers.

EDF won't be able to give you a bespoke tariff as a residential customer, but if you are not using any electricity, then you will effectively be on the tariff that you want. No usage will mean you will only be paying standing charges anyway. Just give them a reading when you finally move

To reduce outgoings now, you could either reduce the DD to just cover standing charges or cancel it completely and then just pay the final bill (maybe an interim as well if it takes a while to sell). It will work out the same in the end though. Just make sure to keep them up to date with meter readings

Don't confuse the bill with the DD...

You will only pay for what you use, but the DD may be higher than it needs to be so do make sure you provide monthly meter readings and ask them to reduce the DD as soon as you have shown the monthly consumption has dropped considerably.

As @MWT says, you only pay for the energy you use. The DD payments will just build up as credit on the account that will eventually be refunded.

You might be better ringing them and asking them to reduce the DD and explain the situation.
