Photos going to One Drive

Options
On my Samsung A70 phone, when going to gallery, a notice has been constantly advising me that I should be transferring my photo's to One Drive due to something expiring in July.

I'm of the opinion that this I'll cost money. Ideally my phone camera pics should go to Google photos, nothing else.

Has my old brain misunderstood? and if so, how do I stop the Microsoft one drive process please.

It depends how much free storage you have with Google Photos, as remember the free options are being removed there soon as well. You get 15Gb with Google but whereas before you could upload “High Quality” photos and not use this up, effectively now they will use it up so you’d have to pay more to get more storage once you’d used that up.

Notwithstanding this, you can turn off the Samsung Gallery backup and use the Google photos app to backup your photos if that’s the way you want to go.

Thanks, slightly concerned and confused now. There's a black/white icon on the Samsung home screen, titled Gallery. Photos taken on A70 bgo into that, from, there they're synced with Google photo's.

When I Google Samsung Gallery, I'm taken to the Playstore where I'm told, "this app is no longer compatible with your device".

So, irrespective of dates, what will happen to photo's taken on my A70?. Surely they have to be accessible somewhere without either paying or forced to an app you're not comfortable with?.

  • I'm really confused. I have a Samsung A70 mobile phone and use it to take photos. They appear in the Gallery. I've synced to Google photos, so I'm able to view the pics on either my Samsung tablet A7 or chrome book using Google photo's.

    Will any of this change?

Im so confused with much of what I read. Ideally I have ant to continue using this model for calls and taking pics and to view them from, either the installed gallery on the phone or the Google photo's app.

Would someone offer a glimmer of hope to this nearly 82yr old please.

I've got a Galaxy S10 phone and an S5e tablet both with Gallery installed, however I have never bothered using the app on either device, preferring to use Google Photos.

Having read your post I decided to investigate Gallery and discovered that it was backing up my photos to One Drive even though I didn't want it to. I'd already cleared out my photos from One Drive via my Windows 10 laptop because I had been told that I was well over my limit and now Samsung Gallery has put a whole lot back again!

I also discovered that the app was also out of date on both devices and updated them via the app. I then Googled Samsung Gallery as you did and was told that the app was no longer compatible with my device which is what you also found! Users are reporting some problems with the new version so I would just ignore the compatibility issue.

I've also found that despite both devices being logged into the same Gmail account the photos in each gallery are quite different so the syncing of devices doesn't seem to be working either.

I'm going to stick with just Google Photos and switch off Samsung Gallery. To do that just go into the app Settings via the 3 horizontal lines bottom right of the screen to find all the options. I know that Google is imposing a storage limit from now on but you will have to be taking a vast number of photos to use it up and even if you do it doesn't cost the earth.

So, on my phone home screen, amongst other app icons I have my Camera icon and my Google Photos icon. It you decide to stop using Gallery then I suggest you remove the Gallery icon to avoid confusion.

    Hope this helps.

  • Yes it does thanks. I'm now going to reread it and take notes. Is the Gallery icon OK on the home screen, the screen be a bit hey refer to as the Samsung Gallery?, surely each time you take a photo, you should be able to view it other than in Google photo's?

Yes, you can view the photos in both if you wish. It's just a matter of choice.

It was really clear what was happening, if you read any of the information that was sent multiple times by Samsung. In a nutshell they were closing Samsung Cloud for photos (still available for other things), and you were given the the option to ensure you and downloaded them all before a certain data. You were also allowed to use an auto transfer option that Samsung had arranged to OneDrive (again before a certain data) - you would be given sufficient storage if you were above the standard free OneDrive tier for at least a year.

Yes, but have to say, at 82 almost its a bit to much for me, taking me ages to remove pin lock, still can't do it.

If you go into Samsung Gallery and then into Settings the first option is to toggle "Sync with One Drive" . If this is showing up in red then it's set to on.
