Car insurance letting insurance lapse

My car insurance will expire in a few weeks. As I will not be using my car for a few months I am considering not renewing my insurance until October. I will of course Sorn the car until then. Will I be penalised when I shop for a new car insurance in October for not having a car insurance in place? Will my 10 year no claim bonus be affected?

generally you have 2 years to use your NCD from a previous policy

Its likely you will need to tell your insurer not to auto renew your insurance.

Typically no, Car has a well developed NCD system and therefore continuous insurance is not normally a question unlike Home Insurance which few give NCD and instead are interested in continuous cover.

As others have said, most insurers allow NCD to stay "alive" for 2 years if not used
  • Watch out when your car insurance renewal comes in. I got several quotes around £260, which were more than my renewal at £220ish. Now, the cheapest alternative quote I'm getting is £560 and that's some 13 days before it's due. Talk about Rip off Britain pricing...

For the scenario in this thread you won't have an existing insurer offer to fall back on, your existing  insurer's quote is usually valid until renewal date, unlike most alternative quotes from comparison websites. So, saving a few weeks insurance could add hundreds.

I believe MSE advice is to shop around circa 23 days before renewal. I did and it still wasn't cheaper, but it was more inline with my renewal quote.

It's worth noting that if you don't insure the car then it won't be insured against ay issues shilst SORN'd.
