Oh, Hercule Poirot...are we now...who are you to pass judgement?

This is for a Polish girl who wishes to do a post grad English course....being the civil fellow, I said I would ask on the board......so...go back to your flock BS........oh sorry you're not wanted there either!
  • i think it may help if you specify what particular postgrad course you're looking at and at what university. there may be help that applies only to a few places, and there will be different options for a phd versus a masters.

i think BS's comments were somewhat harsh, but given the lack of detail in your posts (and the fact that you haven't heard of google when you're clearly happy online!), i don't think it was an unreasonable conclusion to come to.

postgrad funding in the uk is a nightmare - there really isn't much money out there at all expect for personal loans or funding for phds which is very competitive. if you do a search for postgrad funding on the board, a lot of threads will come up, and this link to page on the prospects website should be the place for you to start:

    I am on a post-grad course.
    There is no funding.

    I don't even have a first degree.

Try a Career Development Loan from a bank.
  • I know that your friend isn't sure about the course yet, but when s/he is, try looking at the professional and academic bodies associated with that subject. They can be a good source of funding, and although you don't often get huge grants from them, every little helps. I know that when I was looking at postgrad courses I was offered some funding from the UK Society representing my subject. Sadly I couldn't get enough money together to start the course this year, but hopefully I can reapply in the future.

Also, there are often awards available for students of particular nationalities, but they're generally university and subject specific so you have to look at the uni websites. Like almost every other source of postgrad funding though, it'll probably be competitive.

I think too that there's a book that lists all of the grant giving organisations - I don't know what it's called though, something like the Grants and Awards Handbook? I know that they have copies of it at large libraries and careers services though. I think there's a website too ...

Oooh stroppy now as we're trying to get in there but failing are we?

Well it seems a bit suss that you ask about course and any will do as long as they get some form of free money... Maybe if you came on and had said I'm interested in certain courses, is there any funding available? But no, the more important part was the funding not the course or institution.

    .

Lol...BS...am only doing this as a favour......and as it appears, not very well!

Again shes not decided, probably English, but who knows! And London seems to be the favourite location.

    Further inputs and help welcome.

If she can't afford the course, how will she be able to live?
  • Work...no doubt..she can afford one aspect ie fees....but was needing a job for the rest!
  • why does she want to do anything at all?? You say she just wants to do a masters, but doesn't know what. What the hell is she thinking? A masters is not done for an interesting pursuit for 12 months. Tell her to go and work.
