Return of deposit after end of tenancy

Hi everyone, I’m sorry as this may not be the right forum for this but I am at my wits end! We vacated a property on the 29th May, I had it professionally cleaned including the carpets and left it in a very good state that was stated on the checking report. During our tenancy there was significant black mould in all bedrooms that we reported consistent and followed all instructions given on how to treat it. We also repainted the bedroom after treating the mould with anti damp paint - all at our own expense. We have not received any of our deposit back yet - the landlord had requested quotes for repainting (which I will dispute) the deposit agent is hopeless and impossible to get hold of for any updates and I am desperate to get my money back! I understand that they have to release the amount that is undisputed but I can’t even get this yet! I have called citizens advice numerous times but haven’t reached anybody yet. I’d be so grateful for any advice, I am so frustrated and upset! They have got over £1000 of my money! Thank you in advance

Have you tried to claim it back directly from the deposit protection scheme where it is held?

Can I go straight to the scheme to try to get it back? The agent has implied I have to wait until he has the painting quote back

No, request it from the scheme and let them sort it out: this is what you should have done at the end of the tenancy.
