Bear in mind that sovereigns are both an alternative investment for when all other investments are performing badly (soon?) but also something that you can have in your hand for when the proverbial really hits the fan.  Admittedly no dividend/income but small, distinctive, no tax and often provide reasonable return.  If you had bought when Brown had sold all OUR gold then you would be sitting in a very decent, tax free increase.
