Unable to set basic HTML view as default in Gmail

Hi,
Up until yesterday i was using 'basic html' view as default (I've preferred the basic layout for years) when viewing Gmail in any web browser and never had any issue with this. But i briefly changed the view to 'standard' and since then i cannot set basic view back again as default. Using the URL below does set the view to basic HTML but it reverts back to 'standard' view everytime i log out and then log in again.

Also I'm no longer seeing the option of 'set basic view as default' (or something similar) in gmail. Any suggestions?

Suspect they've changed the way this works and now it will always default to Standard View if the browser supports it.  Which most modern browsers will.
