When you say "old subscription", what makes it old? Are you sure that it is no longer active?

In regard to consumer rights, don't bother. Microsoft doesn't manually activate random subscriptions. You're paying because you have an active subscription, somewhere. And that somewhere is highly likely that is your "old" subscription.

Go back to where that subscription is and make sure you follow the links to cancel it from there. Microsoft support is pretty much useless when you're paying for hundreds of subscriptions, let alone for one.

So I've just had a look. The 'old' subscription is the one I paid for a few years ago. It's listed as a past order and status is set as completed in 2018, so it is not that. They have also checked that account for me when I was on the chat with them. They seem to be baffled which is why we keep going in circles.

What I can do is cancel my card so that the payment won't be taken again next year (it's not a DD/standing order). I would have done that earlier this year but they reassured me that money wouldn't be taken, but here we are. What I'd really like is my money back but that's looking pretty unlikely at this point.

I did wonder if someone may have stolen my card details but I've had no suspicious activity and it would be very strange to just use my details for a Microsoft subscription lol.

Cancelling the card won't cancel a CPA (continuous payment authority) on the account. Get onto your bank and tell (don't ask) them to cancel the CPA that's associated with Microsoft. (They'll say that you need to inform Microsoft - don't worry, you already have). :)
