Stamping on the dipswitch - oh yes. And they failed with monotonous regularity due to being placed in the floor where they got all the road muck. Some things have improved, after all.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

There was just enough hysteresis in the reaction to the shade that every time he came into the sun, his lights came on. Every time he went back into the shade, they went off again.
Have you got that the wrong way round?
    No, hence "hysteresis"...

That was the ridiculous thing about it...

Every car I've ever had with automatic headlights had a roughly 30 second delay before they are switched off. This means you don't get the rapid turning on and off through trees.
I'm amazed that isn't standard on all cars with automatic headlights.

The dash lit is definitely a design flaw.
Yup, too many people still equate lit up instruments with lights on.

In 2021 it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to devise a system that can detect when the bulb is broken. In fact many cars can do that by simply measuring the current. Really should be mandatory.
I can't tell what this has to do with my comment?

Mine comes on around dusk, in rain and even when the conditions are misty or just dull. In fact, exactly when I would be putting them on manually in another car. I'm not a big fan of these 'driver aids' in general, but this one works absolutely and I like it. I leave it on Auto and forget about it.
    What car is this?
I've had many makes of cars with auto headlights, but none have detected fog - even pea soup fog
It's the only time I have to manually override the auto function.

    Yes, that was the problem...

Into shade. Sensor says "Oooh, dark. Pause, two, three. Lights on."
Into light. Sensor says "Oooh, bright. Pause, two, three. Lights off."

It just happened that the pause coincided almost perfectly with the interval of tree shading.

Both our car auto headlights come on instantly.
I go under a flyover every morning and that's enough to get my lights on, then they go off again 50 yards later.
If anyone is experiencing "dark wait two three" then that should be adjustable by the dealer via the OBD port.

It's a Skoda Octavia III. I'm not saying it responds to fog/mist as such - more that in dull, misty conditions the ambient light levels are low enough to trigger the lights to come on. Possibly if we had fog on a very bright day it would not work, but I haven't seen that. Either way, it works fine in normal conditions.
