OK 2 laptops + 2 ipads + 2 iphones 1 WD MyCloud, various USB drives.

Prefer to use the MyCloud as the master, but could select one of the laptops to be it.  How do do automatic backups, please?

Currently been managing with manual updates, but getting tiresome, backing to MyCloud to a USB drive connected to it.

Apologies if I have misunderstood your questions but I'll give it a go as I've used WD MyCloud devices a lot over the years.

I gave up on the WD MyCloud auto backup app on Apple devices - it doesn't seem to want to backup photo's unless the app is open and the screen is unlocked even when auto backup option is selected - I can't fathom whether it is supposed to be able to background update but I didn't have much success with it but if it works for you then great and it is a good way of sharing photos with other users.

In the end gave up and just now just use iCloud as backup for photos and everything else on Apple devices.

I'm not sure I've understood your MyCloud USB questions correctly - are you trying to backup your MyCloud to USB? If so....

As for backing up the WD MyCloud to a USB device - that is another clanger from WD. The earlier WD Mybook devices used to support an auto backup but the MyCloud Home models have become terribly locked down and there is hardly any control over feature like that so I don't think you can schedule auto backup.

Or are you trying to backup from USB to MyCloud? If so...
I did manage to successfully use Windows 10 File History with WD MyCloud to perform automatic backups from my Laptops / PC's etc but it wasn't straight forward because it doesn't allow access to normal fileshares by default - but this could work for you if the USB files started off on a laptop?

I did try using WD sync on my laptop but it ended up corrupting some files or creating duplicate(1) versions for others.

Because of all of the above, I recently I gave up on WD MyCloud after 3 versions over a decade when the last model seemed to take a backwards step, it was just so frustrating and slow so I've ended up buying a proper powerful QNAP NAS with 4x4TB RAID 5 drives and a massive suite of apps but it cost a hell of a lot compared to WD MyCloud and is probably overkill for what you need but does everything that the WD can't do and more.

Anyway, give me a bit more detail / clarity and I'll try to help.
