Collection only item, buyer wants to send courier to collect

  • The QR code scan only protects the seller against "item not received" claims. It does NOT protect you from a payment dispute later on! The buyer can inform their payment provider (e.g. their card issuer) that the payment was made without their knowledge and begin a chargeback, if all the seller has is proof that the item was collected then as far as eBay is concerned the seller cannot contest the chargeback and can lose their money. This unfortunately means that, as far as I can tell, there is no safe way to allow someone to send their own courier if they've paid you via managed payments.
Speaking from experience here, I ended up having to pursue a buyer for payment via another method because we were unable to provide the evidence eBay said they needed. I was told by eBay CS that you need a signature from the buyer who is named on the account, signed on a copy of the order information that includes your address, buyers address, item number and product title. As well as a scan of their ID to prove that it was collected by the person who paid for it. The QR code scan on its' own is not enough.

The link you have provided suggests that if a claim for unrecognised payment was made and seller was eligible for seller protection then the scanned QR is required to defend.

Sorry, for some reason I can’t seem to cut and paste (obviously user error😀)

Thank you to all who have responded.  I am still sitting on the fence.  I have got a few days to decide.

Only just seen this thread, and undoubtedly too late to help now.
IF the item you are selling IS 'postable', then offer postage as an option from the start - it will almost certainly go for (a lot) more.
By allowing someone to arrange their own courier (I don't think there's anything wrong with that), then YOU are still doing all the hard work - ie making sure it's packaged up safely and securely, and waiting in for the courier to arrive. But you are not gaining from the exercise as the item will still only have a local market, so the winning bid will almost certainly be less than it could be otherwise.
That's fine - it's your call. But I don't think it makes 'sense', for the reason stated above.
I have to say, I have won a few undoubted bargains this way - when the item was 'collection only' but it's clear from the ad that it came with its original packaging, I have on a few occasions asked the seller if I could arrange a courier to collect it, checking they'd be 'happy' to be in on the arranged day. Some have said 'Non' - and fair enough - but others have said 'No problem'. And for these I won against local bidders, at bargain prices.
So, if you are prepared to package something up for someone else, then do it for yourself instead and offer the postage option in your listing - you will get a lot more for it.
