Switched Energy Supplier Without Consent

I have recently realised that I have been switched suppliers, without my consent. This happened a few months ago, but due to being informed of the change via an old email address, I missed it. There was no letter or other correspondence, just email.
The new supplier (Neon Reef) has also been taking direct debits from my account, without my permission. I emailed them to ask what had happened, and they said that it was not an error. They said "Utility Point have transferred your electricity supply to Neon Reef as we have cheaper tariffs available for electricity customers and this will help you save money on your energy usage". I have cancelled the direct debit and requested a refund on the money they had taken, but they refused.
Can a company I have never heard of legally set up a direct debit and start taking money without my permission? Can I legally be moved to a different supplier without my permission?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This has already been discussed before.
Utility point and Neon reef share the same directors.
Utility point moved some of their customers over to neon reef. They informed people of this by email. This you obviously missed as your email was out of date. This is apparently allowed as it was part of your terms and conditions (which most people dont read)
Now your decision is do you want to stay with neon reef, if you don't then your option is to switch. (probably wise seeing as neon reefs prices are about to increase)
It was probably not wise to just cancel your direct debit. Did you even contact neon reef and ask them about it?0 -
Not a very wise move to cancel your DD.
You will now build up debt with your energy provider which is Neon Reef.
I would suggest reinstating DD asap and then consider switching away as soon as you up to date with your payments.
