Hybrid

Hi I am trying to decide re Yaris/corolla hybrid. I only do very short trips to shops 95% of the time. Anyone got experience of either re mpg etc. Much appreciated

If you're only doing short trips, you're not going to charge the batteries in a hybrid.
You either want a plug-in hybrid or a full electric car.
  • Thank you for that . Cannot have either plug in or elec, Peugeot 208 auto my other option. Get around 43mpg but even then the engine will struggle in winter.

Very short, cold-engine trips will always be atrocious economy. Forget book figures. You'll also be rarely using the hybrid battery, because it'll never get a chance to recharge.
  • Thank you it's a tough decision to make as it's motability and I have it 3yrs. I am test driving Peugeot 208 auto tomorrow tried Corsa it was ok but a bit drab inside.
  • Try an AYGO if you don't need too much space, avoid the pseudo auto MMT.

Toyota self charging hybrids really won't suit your journey style.

Actually, the hybrid battery will stay charged because Toyota prioritise charging over use when the vehicle is cold.

You will not get the benefit of using that stored energy on very short journeys.

MPG is particularly bad on older Yaris hybrid models in cold weather, the latest model introduced last year may be better.

Your journey profile is going to be bad on any new car, diesels have DPF and petrols now have GPF.
Both will cause problems, eventually (who knows when).
  • My current car is Arona FR auto I get 43mpg around town.

Is it even possible to still buy an IC-only Yaris (other than the sporty one)?  It's getting difficult to buy any IC-only small car these days.
  • What is  IC ? Thanks
