MY mother, in her 80's, no internet, asked me to sign her up with PE recently. I submitted meter readings (of which there were 2 day rate & night rate).

First issue, where there were 2 readings there is now only 1; meter display cycles through time, date consumption reading and back to time. What may have happened to the 2nd reading?

Secondly; why is there 2 diferrent day and night rates here, I would've though 1 day and 1 night rate.

Is there scope for her to have her metre read regularly as this is not something she would be able to provide herself?

Oh, and Peoples Energy have pushed her bill up from £58 to £96 over a couple of months. Way to go PE, she's in a small flat and lives herself, Scottish Power took the urine with her payments and even they were cheaper, hope your proud of yourselves.

I'm starting to regret switching her.

The £58->£96 thing is not a bill, that's just payment into a kitty, assuming its a monthly direct.

If this is an all-electric flat, the two unit figures will be one for daytime usage and one for night time usage (typically 11:30-7:30am, may vary).  If it is an all electric property, it will cost a fortune to run never mind to heat.  The units are all the same, I suspect you've pasted it twice by accident?  You may have to press certain buttons to show the second rate, if you post the model number of the meter somebody will probably say press this, that and the other to show the other rate.

Does the flat have storage heaters?  Is this an all-electric flat?  No gas?

The above is two different meter point numbers (single meter unit).

DD has been unilaterally increased. Mum will be livid at this, given Scottish power charged her less.

Peoples Energys name is mud - she will simply see them as money grabbing oppertunists.

Regarding the meter reading problem - What model of meter is it? Can you post a photo?
Regarding the increased DD - what's your mum's typical annual consumption, in kWh? What was the SP tariff that you've left?

@oh_really   Can we have some ACTUAL meter reads from her time with SP please - from about 12 months ago and the ones you gave PE when you switched.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

If it is a smart meter then they can be remotely changed between an 'Economy 7' type tariff with dual readings and a single rate tariff, but even then you can still usually access both registers as the change doesn't erase the historic use of the 2nd register.

As per the above posts, more detail needed...

Sorry can’t help with the meter reading questions but I just wanted to say I am experiencing a similar direct debit hike after only being a customer for a month. Currently paying £63 a month direct debit, I have used £23 of electricity in last month and now they have said they want to increase the direct debit to £117 a month. I am trying to argue with them there is no evidence for this and I am already accruing credit with my current direct debit. I am finding the emails they send patronising as they are trying to say it is to accrue enough credit for the winter months. I think they are trying to overcharge and take advantage. I will be leaving them unless they sort it out.
  • Thanks for this. I'm moving house this week and was considering moving to them. Think I'll give them a miss now.

Updated: Actually spoke with customer service rather than email and I was informed that their ‘system’ does this automatic hike after joining. I have been told mine will now remain the same, but I would advise for anyone new joining to be aware of this and use phone contact rather than message/email for a better customer service.

    Another month another debacle.
Supply actual readings, to find the previous have changed from actual to estimates. Log out of current submitted readings and login to find my newly submitted readings now show as estimates.
Informed the unilateral raising of the DD is unacceptable to find radio silence from them and its still set at the level they have decided. My mum lives in a small flat in which she only heats two rooms, her DD is more than mine for whole house gas and electric (same supplier).

I have contacted them again but they seem incapable of engaging. I'm really regretting sending her in the direction of PE.

Unfortunately there's not much help that be given because you've provided very little information and have failed to respond to several specific questions. You haven't even told us whether she has gas.
If it's all electric it's hardly surprising that the DD has been increased: the account is likely to be in arrears because £696 (12 x £58) is probably far too low to cover the annual cost.
