Renovations/reconfigurations. How much do you keep future resale in mind? (Long-term)

Hi folks,

We're slowly renovating our 'liveable wreck' and are at the point of the larger, more permanent changes - jigging rooms, adding bathroom(s) etc.  We've not finalised plans for everything yet, as we are working in stages according to our budget.

We will be here for the next 10/15 years, so the changes are for our benefit and lifestyle. But I'm also mindful of maximising appeal when we come to sell. And now we need to make some decisions.

For instance, our smallish, broken, slightly annoying bathroom needs refurbishing, which we could do fairly inexpensively keeping the same layout. But with a lot of extra work and pinching some space from the adjoining (large) bedroom, the bathroom could be made fabulous with a much better layout. It's the main bathroom of a 5 bed house (we're also looking to install an en-suite & additional shower room). We're doing most of the work ourselves - with 3 young kids - so the biggest issue is time.

On the one hand, it works, and there's no real need to take on an additional project/expense. We're used to it, and how much space does one really need for ablutions? On the other, would the small bathroom put off future buyers, for the sake of a few weeks hard graft now? (And obviously we would have the benefit in the interim).

So, in a rambling, round about way. If you plan to live in a house fairly long-term, would you do renovations with the future in mind, or is that overkill? Do things like that actually make a difference to value, rather than just appeal?
