Loads of soft searches but I haven't looked for anything!

Hello. Hopefully someone can advise if I need to be worry.  My credit report is covered with loads and loads of soft searches from insurance companies such as lexis Nexis and ones I haven't even heard of!!  Is this normal or is someone trying to steal my identity?  I'm really worried as I have no idea why these searches should be appearing when I'm not even looking for insurance!  Thanks!

Are you due for renewal any time soon?

No car due November house February.  Same company Carried out 2 searches in same day for example.  Also same companies also showing up like lexis Nexis who haven't bothered to reply to my SAR request yet.  I'm really frightened now as there are 8+ searches every month and I think people are trying to get things on my name.  I once got a letter through from the AA for insurance on a Mercedes SLK when I have a Skoda!

How do I stop all of these searches??

    Thanks

Don't worry. I have like 150 soft searches on one of my files. Many are from companies I didn't ask for anything. It's most likely from comparison websites, including ClearScore, Kredit Karma, etc., where you check your credit reports.

Have you ever moved / changed car partway through the policy and done another comparison site search?
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

Thanks does this apply even if you haven't used a comparison site since January?

The T&C's of these comparison sites say that they have the right to check you again around renewal time.  If you searched for insurance at some point with a policy date of now(ish) that may be why.
  • Lexisnexis risk solutions is nearly always an insurer.  You will find that they dont list which insurer it was doing the search and it just says"lexisnexis risk solutions."
I found the only way to identify which insurer was to do a DSAR to lexisnexis. At first they returned al list of the same - just  a list of generic searches, replied with the following line

"I understand from your response that third party insurers were responsible for these searches. Please identify to me who the data processor was for each of these search instances and identify any third party that the data was shared with for each of these instances. The DSAR response is not complete until this data is received"

  • Regardless of whether that fits the rules of DSAR or not, soft searches from insurers have no impact on anything and are not seen by lenders, so just ignore them

A soft search may have no impact on credit report, but it could be done for nefarious reasons and it is prudent, especially if they are unexpected, to identify why.
