Probably owned by one of those shady private medic companies who attend events and what not.

I would not have thought that the Merc F1 doctor would drive an Audi S5 ????

Or a congestion charge dodge? Like those who registered their 12-seater Land Rovers as 'minibuses' and thus got exemption from the CC?

I pulled out of the purchase. The dealer was unhappy but accepted it.

DVLA confirmed that a car can only be classified as an ambulance with the support of evidence to them, so not an error. They also said that to change it back requires evidence, and the car can't be taxed until the change is processed (currently 6-8 weeks). So I would have a new car I couldn't drive!

One thing's for sure, it's not a "DVLA admin error". Somebody has gone out of their way to change it.

New cars are registered electronically, using links from the importer's computer systems via the dealer's computer systems direct to DVLA's. The full type approval details are included in those links.

    Why? <shrug>
But one thing's for sure... if it rings alarm bells, walk away. There's more than one out there.
I thought emergency vehicles had sirens these days  :):):)
