How long did it take you to find your house?

So me and my other half are currently looking for our first house. We have seen 6 or 7 so far and put in two offers. Waiting to hear back on one. Just wondering how long it took between starting to look and getting an offer accepted? Did you have to go through a lot of houses to find the one? Did you end up in a bidding war?

We viewed about 11 houses when we relocated to a new area, offered on house no. 8 but they’d accepted another offer. Offered on house 10 accepted, but then a week later the EA said another buyer was interested 🙄. We immediately viewed house 11 as wasn’t getting in a bidding war but house 10 reinstated their acceptance. We finally moved in to house 10.

Third house we viewed but first house we put offer on.  No bidding wars in Scotland.

Before being ready to buy I drove away from one, and viewed one property. Both were open house viewings.

When ready to buy I viewed one property I had been looking at, on line, for a few months. Offered on it when I got home and price agreed within less than 30 minutes. Broker emailed to get mortgage application in. Solicitor emailed to get formal offer in. So much easier buying in Scotland.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

Really fascinated to read the answers here. Our first two homes were the first we've seen. This time, we've been searching 10 months, viewed nearly 30 properties and still not found 'the one'.

Looked casually for about 3 months and then seriously for about 2. Saw about 10 properties before offering on one; that offer was accepted (after a little bit of negotiation) and we exchanged on Friday to complete next Fri.

1st house was the only one viewed inside. Knew exactly what I wanted and where. Came up inside 3 months.
2nd house belonged to friends. They gave us a few weeks to contrast and compare with others on the market.
3rd house took 3 years of research on and off in new area, then we bought in a well known area instead! From selling old house we spent 6 months in rental waiting and 3 months to transact.

Just bought my first house. For once in my life my timing was right, the house was put on the market last September and I only viewed it in January, don't think it would be sitting that long today! It was the first house I viewed and I knew I wanted it, right house right price right area, put in an offer the next day three grand below asking which was accepted. I moved in beginning of May so process took a little over 4 months.
  • First house I bought (the one I'm living in) I originally saw it a year before I actually bought it and first one I saw. Seller was overoptimistic on price, so made offer that was rejected. Didn't find anything else I liked (viewed another dozen or so houses) but wasn't in a rush to buy. Then the property went off market, came back with a different agent at more sensible price and bought it.

Moving on now had offer accepted on first one I saw within a week of selling mine. House is okay enough, but location is ideal which is more important for me. But had been spending a few months on rightmove looking as knew would want to move.
  • 29 houses over 18 months (lockdown period) and only just found the right one.

Thankfully we are FTB in a rented flat so there was no rush but I have no idea what we would have done if we were selling.  I hate to think we'd have rushed into buying something we didn't like just to proceed with a sale.

I viewed about 40 as a FTB, took my OH to about 6, and bought on that final viewing.
