Washing machine smells of acrid smoke smell

Hi guys,

In addition to my other thread on nearly burning down my flat with what in effect was a protein fire... It seems my washing machine (inside) has now taken on the smell.

Therefore washing clothes in there seems to actually make them smell more of the acrid burning smell.

I'm starting to actually lose the plot here and despite previously being a homeowner I'm now renting in a brand new area (hence why ALL my clothes smell as haven't had furniture delivered yet) so it's not exactly easy for me to just replace the washer but even if I did it might just happen again.

I've been washing with bicarb and vinegar but it's almost like the washing machine has become 'infected' and is doing more harm than good. I'm not 100% sure this isn't psychosomatic but it's been two weeks and the smell is driving me (literally) mad.

The sofa doesn't particularly smell and that is right by the kitchen but it seems to have taken over most clothes in the house (in multiple rooms)

I just want to wash everything and it to be OK but I'm having to throw things out that have been washed because they still smell and they're making the washing machine smell and transferring that to the next wash.

Does anyone have any advice on this I've tried basically everything and I'm starting to lose it.

Thanks in advance.

PS for those that don't know what a protein fire is (I never did) it's burning proteins until it's basically charcoal and there isn't actually a fire or that much smoke but it creates a grease that seemingly gets everywhere. So in my case a chicken recipe with six chicken legs in which when I found it were only bone and black.

I feel like I can't even wash things now 😢

Sounds like you would benefit from a few days away somewhere.  Can you visit family for a break?

Id prefer to get this sorted, I have relatives visiting in 3 weeks and I'm preying it's gone by then so I don't have to explain 😔

I can understand it bugging you BUT I think you are being oversensitive about your LL and family (both will be used to worse). Make use of the good weather and air your home whenever possible.
