Honeywell t3r Thermostat uselss

Options

Struggling with a Honeywell t3r thermostat for months. It often goes wrong – e.g. this morning for the first time in weeks heating decided to come on (outside = 24°). Throughout the winter it wouldn’t come on when we needed it.

We’ve had 4 thermostats in the past 10 years (moved twice). The first 3 were no problem; user-friendly, intuitive. But I cannot get my head around how the T3R works. You seem to have to recall a capricious combination of moves while never, ever, making a mistake.

I do not want/need a smart meter.

I want a thermostat where the steps are blindingly obvious, suitable for ordinarily people with whose only desire is to be warm or cold at whim.

My question is: are there user-friendly, old-style, blindingly obvious thermostats on the market?

you need to determine if its the thermostat of the boiler thats causing the problem. when the heating was on this morning and it shouldn't have been, was the call for heat flame on the TR3 there?
was there a call for heat light lit up on the boiler?

thats the problem with all "normal" thermostats. I think the best solution to that is get a smart thermostat, and use your smartphone to program the times when you want heating on. i'd say 9 out of 10 people will be able to set up a smart thermostat without even reading the instructions in 2 minutes flat...
but probably 1 in 10 would be able to do the same with a regular thermostat where you need to enter everything in a sequence, and that would take at least 10 minutes and require full concentration!

If you want one without a programming bit they are still out there. I had one fitted last year.
Comes on when the room goes below the set temperature, Turn it up when I’m cold, down when I’m hot. That’s it. Suits me fine.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • VS, if you aren't bothered about the 'Prog' feature - ie controlling both time and temp - then a basic analogue 'dial' stat is available from £10 - £20.
If you like the 'Prog' feature, then the Hive (eg: https://www.screwfix.com/p/hive-active-heating-smart-thermostat-white/915hg for combis, other models for 'stored' hot water) is as nice to use as you can get.
For a further £50 you get the 'Smart' bits where you can use your phone to control it, but that ain't necessary.

It's much easier just to switch the current device to the manual ("MAN") mode when only one temperature is followed and can be easily changed with  "+" and "-" buttons.

  • Of course I can turn it on "manual" but then I would have to wake 20 minutes earlier in winter to switch the heating on. In the 20th century I got both automatic, programmed heat plus a user-friendly system. Why not in the 21st?

Above works for me in 2021 .
heat on at whatever time i set likewise off . Temp controlled by wireless thermostat  . Obviously if stat set to low = no heat .

Problems suggest settings wrong or wrongly wired .

    Yes.........

  • For folk often away from home, and wishing to return to a warm hoosie, Smart with a phone app makes huge sense.
Again, Hive is probably as accessible as any; https://www.screwfix.com/p/hive-active-heating-thermostat/4632j
