This seems a classic example where The Mysterious Third Party should have spotted the rogue reading.
IIRC Neon Reef validates every meter reading, not just the opening reading.

This wasn’t an opening reading: it was a reading taken from a meter before it was removed. Rather than blame ‘the mysterious third party’ I suggest that you direct your ire at Ofgem. Standard Licence Conditions state:

Quote: 21B.1 If a Customer provides a meter reading to the licensee that the licensee considers reasonably accurate, or if the Electricity Meter is read by the licensee, the licensee must take all reasonable steps to reflect the meter reading in the next Bill or statement of account sent to the Customer. Unquote

Meter readings taken by a meter installer (most of whom work for a mysterious third party) or a meter reader are treated as being validated readings. No system is perfect because there are human beings in the loop.

I wasn't blaming The Mysterious Third Party.  If Ofgem were any good they would have realised that if a validation is required when the supplier is changed, it should also be required when a meter is changed.
The latter case is obviously far more important because a mistake when a meter has been changed will never be corrected automatically, unlike with a change of supplier when the next accurate actual reading will sort everything out.

My point was not that humans shouldn't make errors but that machines can EASILY spot errors like these so that they can be alerted for someone to check. It absolutely baffles me that a company like eon doesn't have something like that in place. It can only be because they do not give a toss about unfair bills affecting their customers.

I am not  a computer scientist but I know how to write some code and even I could write that line of code into somewhere to double-check every reading that, for example, estimates that a normal household has spent more than 500kwh * number of residents or more than 10 000kwh per month or whatever is reasonable. This is not a complicated thing to do.

In my and, possibly, others' defence, Hannimal, not everyone on here has defended e.on.  I am mightily peed off with my current supplier, AVRO, to whom I switched from, yes, e.on so I do know how useless they (both) are.
