Raspberry patch but are these still raspberry shoots?
Hi All,
I've got a raspberry patch that I've been trying to look after more, and this year I'm noticing some new growths. Earlier in the year (a few months back) I could see some little shoots of what seem to match existing raspberry canes which was encouraging to see. But now, there's a few growths that have really shot up, but they look a little different to the existing canes to my untrained eye.
Should I just leave these be and perhaps next year they'll be fruit bearing, or are they something else and I should take them out? There might be a couple of blackberries in there too if it makes any difference.
Many thanks for the useful guidance!

Hard to tell at this stage, I think they are raspberries because the prickles are close together, sort of hairy leg look,You'll soon tell as raspberries grow upright & blackberries soon want to flop over & make a messy tangle, plus blackberry thorns can be viciousIf raspberries may even fruit this year if Autumn onesEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0

Given that they are immediately adjacent to fruiting raspberry canes, and the size of the thorns, I'd go for raspberry canes. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Looks like raspberry canes. I've got them popping up all over the place.
They have a root that goes quiet a long way underground then pops up a shoot. Useful for getting new or extra stock.
If you can leave them till August or September they will plant where you want. If you need to remove them earlier they sometimes survive in a bucket of water in the shade. Keep the water topped up.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Great, many thanks for the input. I had a nagging worry I'd be nurturing some common weed without realising! That's handy knowledge about being able to move too, I've got a few patches that are a bit light so I might move them to a better spot later on in the year. Thanks again.0

Just picking raspberries and strawberries now. Yummy.Always wonder why I bother until I can just stroll out and have a sun warmed and tasty ripe and juicy fruit on a whim.Bung a few in with ice cream, porridge, cereal etc.Always love a few in the middle of winter from the freezer. May be mushy and sharp but it's a real taste of summer.
