talk talk contract

Joined Talk talk broadband in January 2021 and signed a contract for 18 months. This morning I received an email telling me they were putting up my price by £2.50 and would be charging 3.5% more every year from April. When is a contract not a contract, they say they are allowed to put the price up as explained in the small print. Talk Talk say that I have 30 days to leave without penalty but that is besides the point. I dont want the hassle.

Well if your contract says they can put the price up, this seems to be a case of a contract being a contract.

They've offered you a chance to get out without penalty.  That is the best you're going to get.  You can't force them to continue to supply it at the current price, especially as they have a contract that says they can increase the bill.

This is the norm. Virtually all telecoms providers do this. It's in the contracts we all agree and accept when signing up.

What does it say in the Terms & Conditions, that you will have agreed to, regarding price rises.  Most providers have some provision for price rises mid-contract.
    • Some specify what that price rise will be.  If it's one of those contracts, then you haven't a leg to stand on.  You agreed to it when you took out the contract.
    • Some only have clauses that say that there may be price rises.  if it's one of those, and you don't agree to the rise, then you can terminate the contract without penalty.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

If TT are letting the OP to exit the contract without charge then their current contract must not include a term to allow mid-contract price rises, and TT are looking to vary the contract. (TT always made an advert point of no mid-contract rises).

@hiondeday I think only Sky (?) currently offer a contract without mid-term rises ... almost every other ISP have a contract term of CPI + 3.9% rise each year. So your only choices are to stay and accept the new contract terms, or leave and find another ISP.

Presumably you mean the OP's current contract?  TalkTalks's latest contract does allow price rises.  Whether it did in January though, I have no idea.

As above depends upon contract date .
Old contracts  had a  we may increase price clause . Newer contracts have a we will increase price by xxx clause .
In either case its the contract the OP took out and probably did not read .
