Nationwide push notifications query

I emailed Nationwide asking if they had any plans to implement push notifications in their app. Thought I would share their reply:

"The app is already using push notifications to notify you of an online card payment needing your approval, and soon we will use push notifications to tell you when there may be a block on your debit card.

I’m guessing the feature you’re most interested in though is what we call ‘instant transaction notifications’ i.e. spend £5 at Tesco and you get an instant notification?

This is absolutely on our backlog, but it’s not something I have a firm enough plan around to give you an idea of date – but hopefully gives you confidence that we recognise the value/importance of this.

I hope this helps.

If you can’t live without those “spent £5 in Tesco” notifications, get yourself a free Curve card and use this to make your payments. Usual caveat: no Section 75 cover if you use a card through Curve. Other than that, I can’t think of any disadvantages.
  • It depends what someone wants push notifications for.

If I have just "spent £5 in Tesco", I know that I have done that, so don't really need a push notification.
(Though I get them at the moment through Google Pay).

However, if, by some remote chance, there has been an unauthorised spend on my account, a push notification would be extremely useful.

Not that I get many of those either (unauthorised transactions).

Just the one, going back as far as I can remember, and that was a Deliveroo (never used them) transaction last year on my Barclaycard (don't use it as it is just a 0% purchase card coming to end of term), that I only noticed by chance when checking my monthly statement.

If the Nationwide timescale isn't suitable then many other banks do them - Bank of Scotland and others in the HBOS group do so it might be worth switching accounts as that was the kind of reason behind having a switch service to vote with your feet.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
