Hello,
We collected the keys for our new place yesterday. A letter arrived today for the previous tenant - it’s from a debt management company regarding a DVLA penalty. Do I just wrote ‘not at this address and return it’ or do I open it and call them or do I give it the estate agent? Thanks

I'd just wrote gone away - return to sender and pop it into a post box. Although I'm intruiged as to how you know what it's about if you haven't opened it.0

How do you know what the letter is about?
Definitely do not open it if it is not for you. Even more definitely do not get involved contacting senders, especially if they are likely to be of the hostile type - a debt collector will only assume you are in some way connected if you start making efforts.
Initially, collect anything for the first couple of week and pass to the EA if you want to be helpful. Otherwise, simply write "not known at this address" and stick it back in the post box. You'll want to do the latter after the first couple of week anyway if the previous tenant has not sorted out redirection.0 -

The previous tenant should have redirected the mail for at least 12 months but many people don't bother.
However sometimes a letter will be sent direct to " your address " but in the Landlords name with extended warranties, Ground rent demands, management charges or letters from lenders/solicitors etc.
It might help you if you could forward or drop off with the lettings agents.
You might think Why should I bother but sometimes this can help in the smooth running of the tenancy1
