Local Authority Search via Agent

My solicitor advised me that our L A search was going to take 4 weeks. I checked the Council's website which stated up to 4 working days, so I emailed the council with the property address to find out why. The council tells me that the searches have already been sent 3 days ago and they believe my solicitor is using an agent and the 4 week deadline was given by them.
When I queried this with my solicitor they said yes we are using an agent and nothing they can do to get it sooner.
I'm so confused - why is there such a big gap? What does an agent do with the searches? Can/should I get in touch with the agent myself?

Are they perhaps going to bundle it together with other searches which take longer?0
