Open jaw flight ticket

I have booked flights only with Easy Jet ....U.K. to Porto, Portugal........Bilbao, Spain to  U.K. ......in September....I will make my own way between Porto and Bilbao....These flights were booked at the same time, payed for in one go  and are under one booking reference number..... Just to add on Easy Jets website at the time of booking I obviously booked one way ticket not return.....My question is what will happen if the return flight is cancelled after I arrive in Portugal ?.....Will Easy Jet be obliged to help me get home or will they just refund the money. .....This is not a question about government travel policy, borders being open etc  I will only go if the countries are fully open. I only want to know if Easy Jet will have an obligation to help me get back or not......

You have not booked an open-jaw ticket in the traditional sense. You have booked two one way tickets which may, or may not be linked.

I have not come across an Easyjet reservation quite as you describe with two flights, different airports, different country arrival and departure points, on one booking but if you managed this then in theory if the outbound flight was cancelled then a refund can be secured for the return flight segment as well.   Had you booked UK > Oporto and then Bilbao > UK separately on two bookings then the matter is not quite so clear cut. Easyjet may well refund the return to UK segment but the bookings would not be naturally linked so it would mean a call to them rather than making the change/refund online yourself.

In the scenario you give, the airline system would automatically send a notification of the cancelled flight and present you with options for a refund or rebook.  It might however just suggest alternatives from Bibao so you may have to be proactive and contact EasyJet in the eventuality and ask for options ex OPO or the airport of your choice.

  • Thank you both for your replies....I am not concerned about cancellation before I go as I know the whole amount will be refunded. This happened to me last year with the same itinery........This is Easy Jets policy

If there are no easyJet flights available to get you to your destination within 24 hours, you have the option to transfer to another airline, take a train, bus or hire a car.

But would this be applicable in Covid times ?...Are airlines still allowed to cancel quoting the pandemic to evade liability ? I am not after the compensation I just dont want to be stranded if the return flight gets cancelled.

EasyJet would not purposely leave you stranded. If you have flown out and need to return you would be offered those options which you highlight above.

Wise that you are thinking ahead to possible eventualities.  Given you appear to be going to northern Portugal and Spain and you have started looking at "what-if" scenarios, perhaps also look into what options airlines like RyanAir/Vueling have from northern Spain (Santander SDR to London Stansted STN for example, or Santiago or Asturias) back to all UK points.   I'd also be prepared to book your own travel back if necessary rather than relying on EZ doing this for you.
