Notice to complete - Grace period

The seller of the place wants a completion date which with the notice to complete grace period ( 10days) will take us into June.
Obviously if all is fine and we complete on the desired completion date then there is no issue, however if something does cause a delay in completion and we go into the grace period into June 2021, i'll be liable for stamp duty.
My solicitor has as a result requested a reduction in this grace period and the vendor solicitor is being difficult.
Are requests for reductions in grace period the common? Any advice?
