Nationwide Flexaccount refused!!!

Options
I am currently in the process of switching bank accounts from A & L as my offer runs out with them soon and I don't agree with the new overdraft charging system.

I tried to open a Nationwide flexaccount as I had heard good things about it.
Anyway to cut a long story short was refused. I have no reason to suspect why and am up to date wit what my credit report says.

Anyway decided to go with another bank and accepted with no problems. Still had no explanation or formal letter of refusal from Nationwide so still none the wiser.

Have others had problems with them? Or is this a plain old simple they didn't think they could flog us anything (i.e. loans, mortgage etc) type refusal.

usual comment that in cannot be disclosed due to data protection but the letter I should be receiving will possibly give an explanation. Still have not received one though.

I am chasing up again tomorrow as I was refused on about 25th November.

  • You could ask them (tomorrow) what the date was on the letter they have sent you.
(I can't see how that would have any data protection implications.)
It might clarify whether a letter has actually been posted yet...
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

Nationwide have a reputation for being fussy about who they offer debit card accounts to. Most people seem to get offered a cash card or nothing at all.
  • Yeah when I was too old for a Smart Account (some years ago now) they refused to give me, or any of my friends at college in a similar position, an account with a debit card. I got a FlexAccount (so I could use e-Savings) but only with a cash card. They must have not been interested in the student market much, given that other banks seem to be happy to give debit cards to young people.

My sister got a debit card from them a few years later though so I thought maybe they weren't being so strict now.

They seem to be trying to weed out people who don't use it as their main account, as they no longer offer a cashcard facility, unless you've not got an account elsewhere.

Lots of people here seem to have problems getting a FlexAccount.

They do offer a cashcard. My girlfriend applied for an account this evening and got offered one which is fine for taking cash out overseas (the reason for getting one).

Both my daughters,18 and 20, have had savings with nationwide since they were born. They use it for savings and they have salary from various bits of casual employment paid in. However when they went to uni, they asked for debit cards and were refused. The reason they were both given was that there had been insufficient activity on their accounts, but if they used the account a bit more and ask again in a year - they might get one then !!! The employee delivering this news suggested if they close the accounts down, and then re-apply straight away, they would automatically be given a debit card ! What logic !
  • Hi there,

I had some trouble getting a FlexAccount online, so I popped into a branch. After having been "referred to head office", they called back the next day to say it had all gone through fine. A big relief, as I was pretty disappointed/shocked to not have got accepted online a few months back.

At what point do you find out if you have a debit card or a cash card?
  • I read about someone who had a credit card application refused. So they wrote back suggesting why they are a good rating. Application accepted.
