Is there a way to find out future insurance cost for a salvage car?
Hi,
Thanks for clicking in.
My car's catalytic converter was stolen recently and my insurance company declared a write off and offered me £4000. If I want to keep the car, I get £3000, i.e. 25% reduction, and the car will be marked as Cat. S.
I asked a private garage who said my car is repairable. I'm really tempted to keep my car, but was trying to find out how much more insurance I need pay in the future but had no luck.
I wondered if there's a way to find out how much insurance it would cost or if anyone could advise roughly how much % increase I should be expecting?
Thank you very much!

The fact you'll never see the question "has your car ever been written off" on any quote system gives you a clue as to its impact.
There will be no impact to your premiums however cars with a write off in the past are less valuable and so a future total loss would be a lower settlement to reflect that.1 -
They wrote a £4k car off as Cat S, structurally damaged, just for a cat theft...? That sounds unusual. Are you sure there wasn't other damage done?
I'd be surprised if there was much of an insurance hike - the value will be less for any future payout, and the categorisation of the car shouldn't affect the future risk any more than the previous claim history has already done.1 -
There could be angle grinder damage to the floor pan from when the theives cut through the exhaust. They don't care what damage they do getting the cat off.2
