I have a .CSV password file (nb NOT bookmark) - copied from my laptop that I am trying to use on my desktop - but I can't see any way of importing it in to Firefox
The only option that I can see is "importing from ANOTHER browser"
Any ideas ?

If you copy the entire Firefox profile from the laptop everything will come from it - passwords, history, bookmarks...Otherwise it is disabled by default as per https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/import-login-data-file - you can renable it in about:config (details in link)1

Not a direct snswer to your question (answered by Neil above) but IMHO the best way to do it is built in to ff facilities! If you still have your laptop with ff working you can go into settings and set up Sync.Do the same (it needs to be the same account) on your desktop. They will automatically sync passwords, history, bookmarks. That is a useful feature (if you have more than one installation of ff) in case you get a problem on one install, all your passwords can then be recovered.1
