Partner is a first time buyer but I am not?

Hi,

I've been looking into different scenarios for me and my partner.

If I am not a first time buyer and he is, I understand that his help to buy isa scheme is still valid if we buy together, but that the stamp duty relief will no longer apply to us due to my non first time buyer status.

However, I do not understand how it works when it comes to a joint mortgage. Do we still get to apply for a first time buyer mortgage because my partner is legible, or does my non first time buyer status mean that we cannot get the benefits of a joint first time buyer mortgage? Does this vary for different lenders?

Yes - it probably varies for different lenders.

    As an example, Nationwide says:

All applicants to the mortgage need to be first time buyers to qualify for first time buyer products/discounts.
    ...
To qualify as a first time buyer your client mustn’t have held a mortgage in the last three years (this includes UK and non-UK mortgages).

If one of you is not a first time buyer then you don't get the first time buyer benefits.
