Updating Amazon number or scam?

I went to sign into my Amazon account and after the password page, there was a page saying a notification was sent to my phone. Unfortunately, the number with my Amazon account was my old phone number, so couldn't proceed. I called Amazon on 08081453768 (which was given on the next page). I was asked my name, email address, house number and postcode. I then gave my new phone number. A security code came through. The phone line went crackly when the customer services operator explained what to with the code. I wasn't sure if I was meant to type this code into somewhere so I asked what do I do with it? Customer services replied 'Just me give number,' in an angry, impatient voice. OK. Code given, then a link is sent to my phone. Clicked on it and viola! I'm back into my account. Cancelled Prime and had confirmation of this in an email.
My friend has said this might be a scam because something similar happened to her brother. It all seemed legit to me. I went directly to Amazon's site, used the number from there. I assumed the details that were asked for were for confirmation that I am who I say I am and which account customer services are dealing with. I did say my full name but my name under my Amazon account is the shortened version of my name. Customer services didn't question this. But didn't think it was a problem.
Has my friend got me worried for no reason? If it is a scam, there's less than £50 in my bank account (hence why I can't afford Prime and cancelling it).

It's probably fine. That number is one of Amazon UK's, and since you called it yourself (as opposed to it being spoofed by a remote caller) then you almost certainly got through to the real company.
For peace of mind you could change the password.

That's what thought! I didn't think anything of it until my friend said about her brother. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I will change my password. It's about time I did anyway.
