Reduction in Council Tax

Hello all, Im not quite sure where to put this, but here goes. I moved into a new house with a lovely bit of green across from the front of the house. A few months after, builders arrived, started digging up the road. Then heavy equipment started being stored on the bit of green space. Now the site office which is a shipping container is plopped right across from my windows and all the heavy diggers etc are now stored there every night. They arrive at 7:15 every morning. The dust and noise is horrendous. I was told by someone that I can apply for a council tax discount because of the noise, pollution, and limited access. Does any one know about this or how to apply for it please?

I would've thought your first port of call is your local council's council tax/revenues department. Personally I've never heard of a refund based on some works going on near your home.1

Your council tax banding is based on the value years ago, adjusted for any improvements that you have made.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Thanks, its not the value I questioning, but the fact that when I viewed the house, there was a lovely little green across from the house. The access road has now been dug up, and the lovely little green is now the site office complete with all the heavy duty equipment noise and dust. I had read there is an exemption one can apply for if there are disruptive building work near your home, and I was wondering if any one had any knowledge of this.GDB2222 said:Your council tax banding is based on the value years ago, adjusted for any improvements that you have made.0 -
If you read it go find it again because I've never heard of other peoples building works reducing your own council tax.Scotch_Bonnet_ said:

Only reduction i can think of that you
might have gone across is that if your home is uninhabitable due to its own building works1 -
So have you contacted the council and asked them?Scotch_Bonnet_ said:

I have given up phoning the council. I haven't got any response.

I dont believe council tax does get adjusted to take account of improvements made by a current owner. The adjustment happens if you then sell the property.GDB2222 said:Your council tax banding is based on the value years ago, adjusted for any improvements that you have made.
I dont think you can get an adjustment based on ongoing works over the road, otherwise the valuation office would need to take on lots more staff.

How long ago did you move? Did you buy the house? Did the solicitor tell you about the impending work? Or the previous owner?

You can get business rates relief for construction occurring near your premises, a former client came to a deal with the construction site next door when the developers got into temporary trouble because the relief was significant.
Never heard of anything similar for council tax1
