Sky selling our details!!

Options
Fortunately my mother (being an avid Guardian reader) told me that hidden in my sky magazine (binned) would have been a notification that unless I opted out of it Sky would be flogging my details to anyone they wanted to!

Add insult to injury, there was only an 0870 number to call to opt out of this.

Furious? Not an adequate description!!

Scouted through saynoto0870.co.uk and found a landline number which took me straight through to customer services and opted out as any sane person would  . The number I used was 01506 421 813 . . . .

How can this be legal that I have to opt OUT of having my details sold???

Happy girl!

Unfortunately the same thing occurs with the electoral register unless you opt out so they're not alone.

I thought opt outs were illegal. They're definitely illegal for online registration under the EU anti spam laws so I'd have thought the same would be applied to mailings etc.

This is not a challenge about the accuracy of your statement but I'd really appreciate being guided towards this legislation.
I'm sure I've recently had stuff sent assuming I want "junk" and if I don't, write to or 'phone such and such an address or number it will be sent? Also similar re sharing personal information within a company or "carefully selected" other companies!! I've also recently had "untick the box if you do not etc." where the box is ticked by default, when registering with companies during an online purchase.
In my opinion the opt out should be by default and contact them to opt in if required.
  • They're not breaking the law, they're actually giving every one of their customers the chance to say no, it may be hidden in the small print but they don't have to put it in huge bold letters across the front of the magazine. If you missed it, basically it's your tough luck if they sell your details on. It stinks but it's legal.
