Is it Worth Appealing Against a Speed Camera Ticket ?

  • I've just paid my fine and sent my licence off for endorsing. I was caught doing 32mph in a 20 zone (I didn't even know they existed apart from around schools), at midnight, no-one around. They're the first points I've ever had so I know how you feel.

I'm sorry you were caught by one of the stupid machines, but there isn't much defence against them.

I recall reading that due to the number of people caught speeding - 2 million tickets last year - if you've had a clean license for a long time, your insurance may well not go up at all after 3 points, as it is more the norm to have 3 points than it is to have a clean license! Hopefully this will be the case for you and you won't have to lose more money than you have to.

If the notice was issued by Thames Valley police, seeing as it your first offence and you are only just over the threshold for a penalty, you will have a very good chance of being offered a "speed awarness course" instead of points on your license. This will cost about £75, and take up several hours of your time, but it canbe worth it not having the points.

I have just been on the speed awareness course and found it very informative. I had to pay £75 but had no points put on my licence.

I think everyone should have the opportunity to go on this course.
