Double Glazing Installation

Good afternoon,

I have had new double glazing installed.

I was not expecting any scratches to be on the outside of the glass, to me that indicates that the guys installing them were not careful enough.

The owner of the company has dismissed my concerns as me being too fussy. I was told that windows are for looking through not looking at and that customers need to lower their expectations. He has agreed to replace a large pane after telling me that would eat into his profits, I said that was eating into our savings and we certainly felt that we were not receiving value for money.

At no point had he mentioned before starting the work that there may be scratches. He gave me a copy of the GGF Glass Datasheet leaflet and said them's the rules.

Is that the actual truth, that scratches are acceptable and should be expected with no come back?

Have you paid?  How did you pay?

Ask them to replace the double glazing units that are faulty - I would not agree to scratched glazing.

No I have only paid the deposit of £700.
He has told me that he will not replace the units because the scratches are within 25mm as per the guidelines of the GGF

He is correct in what he says about GGF but are you saying the scratches do not fall into their guidelines of being acceptable?
    Can you post any pics?

What to expect when viewed as described

Flat transparent glass, including laminated or toughened (tempered) or coated glass is acceptable if the following are neither obtrusive nor bunched:

    • bubbles or blisters

    • fine scratches not more than 25mm long

    • minute particles.

The obtrusiveness of blemishes is judged by looking through the glass, not at it, under natural light. It must be understood that the glass used in double glazing is a processed glass, and so as a consequence, blemishes are to be expected.

  • The GGF guidelines are correct and windows are indeed for looking through rather than at. If it is within the guidelines it shouldn't be replaced and you should pay the balance. If it isn't within the guidelines then I think the correct thing to do would be withhold part of the balance that is a fair representation of the piece of glass in dispute. Good Luck.
